ESO Signs Technology Transfer Licence Agreement with FRACTAL S.L.N.E. for Cooling System ESO has signed an agreement to license its cooling system technology to our company FRACTAL SLNE. Continuous flow cooling systems were first developed at ESO for the cooling of instruments and detectors for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Continuous flow systems are more compact than traditional systems that use a bath of very cold liquid, but share the advantage of being vibration free. The continuous flow system allows the temperature within an instrument to be changed from room temperature to -193 degrees Celsius and is not affected by the loss of electrical power. As a result, the instrument can be kept very close to its operating temperature and the vacuum within the instrument can be retained. This agreement includes the licensing of the well-proven cryostats (which regulate the low temperatures) that are used to cool individual detectors from room temperature down to -193 degrees Celsius and the more sophisticated version that is used for the cooling of the ultra-stable detectors used in more sensitive measurements. More information can be found on ESO press release The image by ESO shows the MUSE instrument on the VLT: equipped with 24 continuous flow cooling systems (Credit: ESO) |

Sliced Pupil Grating published in SPIE NEwsroom SPIE NEwsroom has published our paper on "Sliced Pupil Grating: a compact solution for increased spectral resolution", resulting from a collaborative work between FRACTAL and UCM to design and develop a functional SPG prototype. Our results show how these devices increase the spectral resolution up to a factor of x4, without changing the overall instrument geometry, being an innovative solution for combining several spectral resolution regimes in compact spectrographs. FRACTAL in collaboration with the UCM Astrophysics Group has built a high resolution diffraction grating. FRACTAL, in collaboration with the Astrophysics Department of the University Complutense of Madrid, has designed and is already building a prototype for a high resolution grating base on segmenting the pupil and the recovering the image on detector. This novel method will allow us to get high spectral resolution where this was not possible before. In particular this method can be applied to Littrow-instruments to increase the resolution, to Space instruments, due to the compactness of these elements and to existing and new instruments in large Ground-based telescopes. This project has been partially funded by the Aerospatial Plan of the Madrid Local Government (Exp: 22/2009 AEROESPACIAL 2009, Reference: 04-AEC0913-000022/2009). |
